Roblox Introduces Scoped User IDs to Strengthen Player Privacy.

Roblox Introduces Scoped User IDs to Strengthen Player Privacy.
Read aloud

Currently, every Roblox player has a single Global User ID that is used across all games, APIs, and Roblox services. While this system has supported developers for years, it also means that users can potentially be identified and followed across multiple experiences.

With the introduction of Scoped User IDs, players will instead receive a unique User ID for each game they visit. This change aims to improve privacy by preventing a single identifier from being used across the entire platform.

Roblox stated that the update will initially apply only to players visiting a game for the first time after the feature is rolled out. Existing players who have already played a game will continue using their current Global User ID within that experience. Over time, as more users join new games, Scoped User IDs are expected to become the primary identification system across Roblox.

Testing Begins Soon

Developers can already begin experimenting with Scoped User IDs through the newly available Player.User property in Roblox Studio and creator-facing Engine APIs. Several services that previously required numerical User IDs, including game pass and badge-related APIs, now support the new User data type.

In early July 2026, Roblox plans to allow developers to opt specific accounts, such as testing and quality assurance accounts, into the system. These accounts will experience the platform exactly as new players will after the full rollout.

Roblox says this early testing period will help creators identify potential issues and prepare their games before the wider launch.

Rollout Timeline

Roblox has shared the following roadmap for the release of Scoped User IDs:

  • July 2026: Developers can opt in to test Scoped User IDs and provide feedback.
  • August 2026: Open Cloud APIs will gain support for Scoped User IDs while maintaining compatibility with Global User IDs.
  • August 2026: Roblox will introduce a User Account Linking API, allowing players to grant permission for their identities to be linked across games when needed.
  • October 2026: Scoped User IDs will be rolled out platform-wide to all Roblox experiences.

Impact on Shared Ban Systems

One area of concern for developers is the future of shared ban lists, which many communities use to prevent disruptive players from moving between games.

Roblox acknowledged these concerns and confirmed that it is exploring enhancements to its Ban API and other moderation tools. The company says any improvements will aim to balance community safety with user privacy, transparency, and the ability for players to appeal moderation decisions.

Additional information about ban list functionality is expected before the full release of Scoped User IDs in October.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of Scoped User IDs represents one of Roblox’s biggest privacy updates in recent years. By giving players unique identities within each game, Roblox hopes to create a safer and more private experience for users of all ages while still providing developers with the tools they need to build and manage their communities.

Developers are encouraged to begin testing the feature now and provide feedback as Roblox prepares for the broader rollout later this year.
