Roblox Unifies 2D and 3D Clothing Rules in Major Marketplace Overhaul

Roblox Unifies 2D and 3D Clothing Rules in Major Marketplace Overhaul
Read aloud

The update introduces lower upload fees, new verification requirements, changes to creator earnings, and a unified publishing system designed to improve Marketplace safety and reduce abuse.

Lower Upload Costs, New Publishing Rules

Starting July 14, creators will pay 200 Robux to upload both 2D and 3D clothing items, reducing the previous 3D upload fee of 300 Robux.

However, putting an item on sale will still require a publishing advance starting at 600 Robux, with the exact amount depending on the item category.

To continue uploading and publishing avatar items, creators must:

  • Complete ID verification or link a verified parent account.
  • Enable 2-Step Verification (2SV).
  • Maintain an active Plus or Premium subscription.

Roblox says existing 2D creators must meet these requirements before July 14, while creators without an active subscription will have their 2D clothing removed from sale starting August 1, 2026.

Creator Revenue Share Reduced

One of the biggest changes affects how creators earn Robux from classic (2D) clothing.

Previously, creators received 70% of Marketplace sales. Under the new system, creators will receive 30%, matching the current payout for 3D clothing.

The remaining 40% of the community revenue share will instead be allocated to experience owners when items are sold inside games.

Roblox says this gives game developers a stronger incentive to showcase clothing, helping creators reach more players while keeping the total amount paid to the developer community unchanged.

If a creator sells their own clothing inside their own experience, they will receive both the 30% creator share and the 40% game owner share, maintaining the same 70% total payout.

Why Roblox Is Making the Change

According to Roblox, the update is focused on improving Marketplace security.

The company says separate publishing systems for 2D and 3D clothing created loopholes that bad actors could exploit to bypass moderation, distribute low-quality content, and misuse asset uploads.

By applying the same verification, publishing and monetisation rules across all avatar items, Roblox says it can create a single security and accountability model while laying the groundwork for future Marketplace features.

The company also noted that automated uploads of 2D clothing dropped significantly after earlier publishing requirements were introduced, helping reduce repeat abuse.

Responding to Community Concerns

Many creators expressed concern that the reduced revenue share could make 2D clothing financially unsustainable.

Roblox says it is not phasing out classic clothing, arguing that bringing 2D items onto the same backend as 3D assets will allow future Marketplace improvements to benefit both formats.

The company added that the changes are intended to improve creator accountability and Marketplace safety rather than discourage 2D creation.

Existing Purchases Unaffected

Roblox confirmed that clothing already purchased by users will remain fully wearable and will not be affected by the policy changes.

The new requirements and revenue model take effect on July 14, 2026, with subscription enforcement for existing 2D items beginning August 1.

Creators are encouraged to complete verification, enable 2-Step Verification and ensure they have an active Plus or Premium subscription before the rollout begins.
